Our curriculum is guided by the practices, principles and learning outcomes of the EYLF and embrace the Belonging, Being and Becoming motto, providing a child centered curriculum that is always evolving towards the child’s interests, passion, curiosity and well- being.
Based on the Munro Centre’s philosophy of meeting the needs of the children, we have great respect for our family’s cultural background. We work closely and in partnership with our parents by welcoming and encouraging their input into our program, ensuring the best outcomes for all children. Our children are competent and capable of so much.
Our respect for culture and diversity extend to teaching children towards reconciliation, acknowledging the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island as the first nation people.
As part of the children’s routine, we embedded coming together as a group to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land. The children are invited to join us in our yarning circle and encouraged to participate in singing, dancing, playing games and storytelling.
Being part of the group provides the children with confidence to share their culture, knowledge, promote acceptance, individuality, inclusion and identity, awareness, and responsibility. We believe in creating leaders of the future.
We educate, promote and encourage the children to look after the environment, and respect all living things. We embed the participation and involvement of the children in looking after the chickens, worm farm and gardens. We are an environmentally friendly centre, using recycled materials as part of our resources and incorporate this in the children’s daily play and activities

Program
The Munro Centre’s Program is one that is flexible. We provide balance between child led, child initiated and educator supported learning, taking into account the families and children’s input.
The program is based on our understanding of each individual child, ensuring that children’s cultural background is included. Our learning environment encourage children to play creatively, explore, solve problems, build children’s confidence, taking advantage of spontaneous play to teach and scaffold learning.
We placed high value of nurturing and building trusting relationships and attachment with each child to support their sense of belonging, being and becoming.
We reflect and evaluate the program on weekly basis to ensure we are supporting children’s physical, social and emotional and intellectual developments.
Just some of the ways we assist children reach their potential, is looking at the following areas.

Healthy Habits – We support children to develop lifelong self-help skills. This include promoting healthy eating, plenty of outdoor physical activities, sun awareness. We also encourage our families to do the same. From a young age, children are given opportunities that they are developmentally ready for or show an interest in eg learning to wash their own hands, feeding themselves, wearing a hat when outdoors, packing up after play to learn and practice new skills.

Sleep & activity – It is important that our children are able to sleep, rest and be active when they need to. It is for this reason our educators support each individual child to see to their needs. In our nurseries, the daily routine reflects the child’s home routine, sleeping, playing and eating when they need to. In our older groups, we have a daily flow that is both predicable and flexible. This assists each child to feel safe and secure.
Our educators are trained on safe sleeping practices for young children, through Red Nose. https://rednose.org.au/
There are always plenty of opportunities to be active both outdoors and in, providing children a chance to choose what they’re interested in and giving them a challenge.
We also follow Government guidelines with respect activity for young children.

Language & literacy – The majority of our families at The Munro Centre have English as a second language, as do our educators. We understand the importance of promoting language and literacy for our children. We know that the development of language and literacy skills start at birth, and so we partner with families to immerse our children in rich language opportunities through meaningful engagement, reading stories, songs in English and home languages. Each year, we participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge that promotes reading stories to children every day. To support this, we also have a children’s library, where children can borrow books have them read at home and return them. These books are changed over weekly so there is plenty of variety. Did you know that reading out loud improves children’s listening skills, vocabulary acquisition, and the understanding of common story themes and structures that will factor into children’s future success?
Sustainability – We endeavor to embed Indigenous ways of caring for Mother Earth. We educate, promote and encourage the children to look after the environment, and respect all living things. We embed the participation and involvement of the children in looking after the chickens, worm farm and gardens. We are an environmentally friendly centre, using recycled and natural materials as part of our resources and incorporate this in the children’s daily play and activities. Recycled items are dropped off by families, UQ and local businesses. Children and educators recycle items like paper towel rolls, empty yogurt containers etc for activities. We ask parents to send food in containers that can be washed and reused, rather than creating landfill with unnecessary wrapping. We have rain water tanks that flush our toilets and water our gardens. We teach our children about the importance of using on the water we need. Our bathrooms are equipped with water saving fittings. We invite our families to join us with this by holding Tree Day, where we plant free Australian Natives from the Brisbane City Council and regular Working Bees where we maintain and clean our environment. We have also installed solar panels to help with our electricity usage.
